This temple is located at Bukit Choras, Yan, Kedah. The Bukit Choras archaeological site was first reported by James Low in the mid-19th century. He recorded the remains of brick structures at the hilltop, believed to be a temple. Subsequently, H. G. Quaritch-Wales conducted archaeological research at the site in 1937. He dated the site to the 6th century CE based on the shape and dimensions of the laterite bricks, comparing them with sites in southern Thailand. A Buddhist inscription was also discovered, carved on a rectangular piece of slate at the hill, consisting of four lines of writing using South Indian script.
In 2023, systematic archaeological research was carried out at the site by a team from University Sains Malaysia (USM), led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nasha Rodziadi Khaw, in collaboration with the National Heritage Department. The excavations revealed complex structures such as a temple, believed to be approximately 1,200 years old, along with life-size Buddha statues, Pallava inscriptions, and pottery artifacts, indicating the site’s function as a religious and cultural centre in ancient times.
