ARCHAEOLOGY DIVISION

Introduction

The Archaeology Division plays a key role in ensuring that the nation’s archaeological heritage is protected, conserved and managed in a systematic manner through the implementation of scientific research, conservation and continuous preservation activities in accordance with the National Heritage Act 2005 (Act 645). The Division is responsible for identifying, documenting and assessing the significance of archaeological sites and remains to ensure their sustainability for future generations.

In addition, the Archaeology Division is entrusted with the development of archaeological sites as centres for research, education and heritage tourism. Such development is carried out in a sustainable manner, taking into account heritage protection, the interests of local communities and the enhancement of the nation’s historical and cultural values, in line with national heritage conservation policies.

The Archaeology Division comprises three main branches that function in an integrated and complementary manner. The Land Archaeology Branch is responsible for conducting archaeological research, excavations and documentation of land-based sites covering prehistoric, proto-historic and historic periods. This branch also undertakes development impact assessments, site monitoring and proposes appropriate protection and conservation measures to ensure that archaeological sites are not adversely affected by physical development activities.

Meanwhile, the Underwater Archaeology Branch is responsible for carrying out research through survey and salvage activities related to underwater cultural heritage. The branch also plays an important role in preserving and conserving underwater cultural heritage through various activities, including the systematic, accurate and integrated identification, collection, assessment and documentation of sites and shipwreck discoveries for reference, documentation and research purposes.

The Repository and Development Branch, on the other hand, is responsible for the registration, storage, conservation and documentation of archaeological artefacts and materials obtained from research and excavation activities. This branch also plays a significant role in knowledge dissemination through exhibitions, publications, educational programmes, capacity-building initiatives and public awareness activities aimed at enhancing public understanding and appreciation of the nation’s archaeological heritage.
