In exercising his powers through the National Heritage Act (Act 645), Section X, Subsection 67 (1), the minister may declare 'any person living as a National Heritage'.
Since the Act was enacted (30 December 2005), then a total of five (5) persons living has been appointed as National Heritage Living People (WAKOH) in 2015 from various background and leadership skills in the field of art and culture.
These figures are
i. Dato' Aripin Bin Said (Lagu Rakyat)
ii. Romli Bin Mahamud (Awang Batil)
iii. Maznah Anak Unyan (Ayaman Kraftangan Tradisional Orang Asli)
iv. Mathew Ngau Jau ( Muzik Sape)
v. Saad Bin Talib (Mek Mulung)
CRITERIA FOR CONSIDERATION BY SUBSECTION 67 (2) ARE:
a) the importance of history, association with or relationship to the history of Malaysia;
b) the characteristics or aesthetic of the design;
c) the renewal or scientific or technical achievement;
d) the social and culture;
e) the potential to educate, explain or provide further scientific investigation in respect of Malaysia's cultural heritage;
f) interest in exhibiting the richness, diversity or unusual integration of features;
g) rarity or uniqueness of the natural heritage, cultural heritage, tangible or intangible, or underwater cultural heritage;
h) the description of a site or object as part of a class or type a site or object; and
i) any other matter related to the cultural heritage significance.
