TRADITIONAL MEDICINE

The existence of traditional medicine spread over for a long time. There are many ways to practice it according to the custom and culture of each community. The practitioner (Shaman, `Pawang’, Healers, `Bobohizan’ or Manang) usually use intermediate materials such as fruits, dolls, boats and many more during the healing session. The method and means are also a bit peculiar and distinctive. Communities that practice traditional medicine believes that it can heal and cure the sickness. Traditional medicine uses more natural resource such as herbs as medicines that is believed will not have any side effects to the patients. Traditional medicine practitioners heavily rely on knowledge and memories that they inherited from their teachers for generations. Among the nobility, there are written medicinal books that have Persian influences such as Tib scripture. Whatever is said about the medicinal traditional and treatment during dreaming or inspiration with certain ways. Nowadays, traditional medicine is more acceptable in rural areas only due to its relation with culture and beliefs. There are 7 types of traditional medicine that has been declared as national heritage. They are:

a)    Main Peteri

b)    Ulik Mayang

c)    Bekam

d)    Bomoh Patah

e)    Urut Tradisional

f)     Bidan Kampung

g)    Sewang.
